well, yesterday was basically a big day-long orgasm for political scientists. i was sick and i think i still got off on the whole matter. so, jean chretien is stepping down- but in 18 months. apparently john manley has known this for quite some time as he slyly told peter mansbridge in his corpse-like manner which is so repugnant. apparently warren kinsella also knew for quite some time. even allan rock knew. lots of people knew- except paul martin. so, it appears that the pm has gone out of his way to lure paul martin into a hot little leadership bid only to suck the life out of his momentum and make him try and hold off on blowing his load for another 18 months- basically he's saying, good luck trying to keep it up that long!

i do think that peter mansbridge raised a very good question last night though: if the party is somehow now able to manage both running the country and a leadership contest, why weren't they able to do that in june when the pm shut down leadership contests and started this whole mess? looks like a little ego trip for jean again...

so the post-coital bliss continues for political pundits and news whore alike and we'll see whether or not paul martin can save himself from blowing his load before February 2004 and whether jean chretien can manage to spend his way into a bright and shiny legacy...

more later.
