so my friend Ann Dowsett Johnson quoted me in her essay in Maclean's on university quality this week. I love chatting with her and am sad that we'll no longer chat as often as we do. However, i feel like I should put some context around my quote.

In the article I talk about the "Faustian bargain" that universities face- where the commodification of education and the potential deregulation of university tuition looks tempting. However, I don't think my complete and unhampered criticism of deregulation and commodification comes through. For the record, I am unequivocally and wholeheartedly committed to the notion of education as a public good and believe it should be universally accessible and that governments should put more value and money into these ideals.

on an unrelated note... HR Lesson #1: If you're going to fire someone, don't have your wife come in to tell the rest of the co-workers about it and make sure she doesn't do things like
a) reveal personal details about the termination
b) single out people in the office to ask how they're feeling
c) make snide comments about the terminated individual or
d) tell people they shouldn't be mad about the decision because it was really hard on the boss (aka her husband)
anyway, that was my day at work today. not so good for office morale (at least it wasn't me getting fired though).
